A lecture by Rose Kerr, a world authority on East Asian art
Join us for an illustrated lecture by Rose Kerr, who will take us on a fascinating journey to explore two of the most remarkable archaeological discoveries in China: the terracotta warriors and the emperor’s store.
The terracotta warriors are a vast army of life-sized clay soldiers, horses, and chariots that were buried with the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang, in 210 BC. They were meant to protect him in the afterlife and demonstrate his power and glory. The emperor’s store is a collection of miniature terracotta figures, animals, and objects that were buried with his grandson, Emperor Jingdi, in 125 BC. They reflect a more peaceful and prosperous vision of the afterlife and reveal the daily life and culture of the Han dynasty.
Rose Kerr will compare and contrast these two extraordinary tombs and the historical contexts of their creation. She will also share her insights and experiences as a leading expert on East Asian art, especially ceramics.

About the speaker
Rose Kerr is a world authority on East Asian art, particularly ceramics. She worked as Keeper of the Far Eastern Department at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, and acted as President of the Oriental Ceramic Society. She is currently Honorary Associate of the Needham Research Institute in Cambridge and Honorary Fellow of the University of Glasgow. Author of and contributor to 28 books on Asian art, she also writes regularly for magazines and journals.
Rose studied Chinese at university and spent a year in China as a student during the Cultural Revolution. She visits Asia frequently on research trips, and in 2015 was created an Honorary Citizen of Jingdezhen, China’s “porcelain capital”. She is an experienced teacher and lecturer, having taught at the universities of London, Oslo, Sussex and Glasgow, was a lecturer for NADFAS for many years, and has conducted both overland and seaborne cruise parties round parts of Asia. Rose has been visiting Nelson for 20 years and lives here for part of the year.
